This paper outlines some data acquisition systems previously considered by Ford, but is primarily concerned with a customised system for efficiently collecting component durability data. Ford US engineers have developed a purpose built package offering the ideal compromise. This Mobile Microcomputer Data Acquisition System (MMDAS) uses 13 micropressors; providing sufficient on-board intelligence for partial data reduction and formatting prior to final analysis on a relatively low powered desk-top computer. Typically, a data turn-round time of 3-4 hours can now be expected compared to 1-2 weeks previously.
