We have investigated an integrated zirconia air-fuel ratio sensor for automotive engine control which can detect air-fuel ratios over a very wide range by utilizing concentrations of residual noncombustible gases and oxygen gas in the exhaust. The principle of this sensor is based on the rate-determining diffusion of gas at the gas diffusion aperture. By using an oxigen pumping phenomenon, air-fuel ratios of three states, that is, rich, stoichiometric, and lean regions can be detected. As the sensor is used in exhaust gas where the ambient temperature changes greatly and suddenly, countermeasurees for temperature influence of the output characteristics are important. This paper describes the measuring range and accuracy of the air-fuel ratio sensor.
