Our cycle testing of sodium-sulphur cells has been most encouraging. They have performed beyond our expectations with excellent cycle life and seemingly no cycle life dependence on depth of discharge. If this observation holds true the usefulness of these cells to the Air Force will be substantially increased. Two cells have failed after extended cycling. Both failures seem to be best explained by internal short circuiting. The failure of one cell allowed us to speculate that the two plateau charge profile occasionally observed is associated with the various sodium poly-sulfides formed during cycling. Our initial feeling is that cell matching will be important when building batteries. With a variety of cell chemistries and discharge voltages, cells could become mismatched during their lifetime.
