The concept of auxiliary energy storage in motor vehicles has been explored by researchers for many years in the past. Each particular kind of such storage seem to have their proponents. All researchers cite gains on specific driving cycles for various size vehicles. This paper lays down some fundamental ideas of energy storage transmissions to add some cohesiveness to the research. Energy storage size as related to the vehicle and its application are presented along with some technical problems associated with the storage media. The paper compares auxiliary energy storage, the vehicle, the driving cycle, and the present available transmission technologies to conventional systems. Some econommically viable motor vehicle applications for each type of energy storage system are discussed.
