During the years between 1983 and 1985 the surface of the carriageway on the Schierstein Bridge near Mainz, West-Germany, was rehabilitated. This section of road had four lanes but no hard shoulders and therefore did not provide the conditions appropriate for the solution recommended in the German safety guide-lines. The appropriate solution is called 'segregated contraflow' (i.e. one lane is transfered to the contra-flow carriageway) in Great Britain (Harlow and Matthews). The carriageway remaining after the closing of the one lane was only wide enough to carry three lanes of traffic at the worksite. Therefore a system was installated that the middle lane can be used for both direction alternately. This paper describes the system used, discusses the operation of the system and provides a preliminary indication of the benefits achieved.
