This paper offers a brief overview of the problems and some of the practical techniques used in making acoustic propagation measurements at sea. To measure propagation loss one has to have an acoustic source of known strength at some point A in the ocean, and observe the signal level with a hydrophone at a remote point B. To determine the dependence of propagation loss on range, the distance from A to B may be varied from a few kilometres to 100 kilometres or more.
