A microprocessor is used for controlling thrusters to relieve the tension in up to 16 anchor lines in extreme weather conditions. This enables the vessel to remain on a selected location for a longer period than would be possible with only achors deployed. The system is installed only on specialized vessels such as semi-submersible drilling rigs or 'flotels' which need to remain operational throughout the winter storms. The GEM80 microprocessor can compute the required thruster force, based on anchor-tension signals in conjunction with a position measurement device, to oppose the environmental forces. A second microprocessor is provides to enable the operator to carry out on-board simulation by data input via the keypad, and calculate the likely affect on the anchor lines and position location in such cases as a line break.
