The modern avionics intermediate level repair facility consists of multiple, highly reconfigurable repair stations that service a randomly generated workload. The complexity of effective real time management of such a facility under high workload suggests the use of computerized maintenance control algorithms. This paper begins by briefly surveying the salient results of sequencing and scheduling theory and heuristics. The theory review is followed by a characterization of the real maintenance environment found in a busy intermediate shop. After considering theory and the reality of the problem at hand, a relatively straightforward, fast running scheduling heuristic is suggested. The algorithm proposed is keyed to maintaining aircraft availability. 19
