A boundary element technique is applied to a two-dimensional model of a single-sided linear induction motor (SLIM) to evaluate the effect of finite iron and winding lengths. The flux distribution predicts the presence of a drag force near the exit end, which is significant in determining the characteristics under normal speed operation. The computed results are compared with those by Fourier series method to confirm the validity of the procedure. Comparison with the space harmonic technique confirms the feasibility of the BEM for LIM's analysis. The computed results make evident the presence of the drag force caused by the finite iron length. It suggests that the drag force is almost independent of the supply frequency but rather dependent upon the slip. Furthermore, the new hybrid method is proposed to compromise the correction of the transverse edge effect in the BEM and the boundary conditions on the vertical surface in the space harmonic technique. It results that the identical prediction is given in comparing with the analytical method.
