This paper is to report on the status and results associated with ongoing research and development of techniques for utilizing highly modular concurrent multiprocessors for commercial airplane simulation and test. Boeing has undertaken an effort to determine the feasibility and software requirements for a simulation system that: 1) is faithful to the avionics environment simulated; 2) attains low cost modularity through concurrent multiprocessor architectures; 3) uses industry standards such as chip sets, busses, networking, and UNIX operating system; and, 4) maintains commonality of system elements such as real-time and development. Particular emphasis will be placed on the real-time software environment and the transition from simulation development to real-time execution.
