An improved direct communications link between US and Soviet Union based on two independent and parallel satellite communications circuits, each using a separate communication system in each country is described. The US provides a circuit via the Intelsat system, the Soviet Union a circuit via the Molniya II system. The design of the US Molniya II Satellite earth station is described. It consists of two identical and independent communications systems providing simultaneous transmission aid reception of C-band f.m. modulated signals through 60-foot trucking and communications antennas and ancillary subsystems. Special redundancy is provided within each of the two antenna systems. Automatic tracking and computer directed modes are employed.
