It is shown that microwave power at 2450 MHz can be effectively coupled into a bituminous pavement to a depth of =12 cm (4-5 seconds) without overheating the top layer of the asphalt road. It is therefore possible, without damaging the asphalt surface quality, to completely seal road cracks, so that water infiltration into roadbeds is minimized and frost heave prevented. In the autumn of 1973, microwave power was applied to seal a transverse road crack (24 minutes long, 0.5 seconds wide, and 6 seconds deep) on Highway 20 between Montreal and Quebec City. The repaired surface was exposed to heavy traffic conditions during the 1973-1974 winter, with promising results.
