South African Railways have a network of over 22000 Km and carry annually more than 600 million passengers and 100 million tons of freight. Most main lines from the coal fields, iron ore mines and the industrial regions near the seaports in the south are single track. To increase capacity while avoiding the expense of installing double track or more manned signal boxes, SAR have expanded the centralised traffic control system to all main lines. This also economises in staff and gives more flexible control.
