The authors have developed a light load truck which has a high efficiency driving system for practical use in the city. They used a compound motor that is saturated with magnetic flux, so that the additional loss of the motor caused by chopper drives is negligible. Secondly they designed a driving system which balanced the system efficiencies at a constant speed, and at acceleration. The motor also withstood heavy overload. As a result, at a vehicle speed of 40 km/h, efficiency of the developed driving systems, motor and controller, was 75% and the utility factor of electric power was 7.1 km/kWh. When the vehicle was driven under practical operating conditions, i.e. starting and stopping, energy loss was small and a long operation distance was obtained.
