Describes the development of three-phase traction systems in Great Britain as well as in other countries. Discusses two groups of invertors: those requiring a variable DC link voltage to obtain voltage variation of the output; and those requiring a fixed DC link voltage. The first group consists of a range of six-step invertors while the second group consists of a range of pulse width modulated invertors. Outlines the principle of cycloconvertors pointing out as their main drawback the large number of thyristors required. Discusses also the use of rotating machine drives. Concludes that although in 1960s the AC traction was not considered to be competitive the situation has changed in 1970s, particularly when it was indicated that traction motors could be contained within the space occupied by the tubular axles in advanced passenger trains.
