Discusses the development and applications of the ATLAS language. Although ATLAS was originally designed for avionic systems ('Abbreviated Test Language for Avionic Systems'), by 1975 it was changed to 'Abbreviated Test Language for All Systems'. The advantages of ATLAS over existing test formats are that it has a defined vocabulary syntax and style; job control is easier as specifications can be broken up more easily; statement formats act as reminders and avoid errors of omission; and major national projects are easier to define with certainty of correct interpretations.
