Infrared countermeasures (IRCM) with advanced technology minimize the threat from attack missiles using IR seekers. The types of IRCM that can be employed, and their theories of operation, are presented in a comprehensive tutorial. All modern combat aircraft have infrared signatures from IR energy emissions caused by plumes, hot exhaust gases, hot metal parts, and/or solar reflections. This radiation provides a point source of energy for threat missiles to 'home' upon. Those threats operating in the infrared band have long wavelength seekers that respond to one of the above classes of heat radiation. These range from fairly simple hot metal trackers to more sophisticated plume trackers that look at the energy emissions from the trailing plume of jet aircraft. Protection can be afforded these aircraft by employing one or more infrared counter-measure techniques. Two such active countermeasure devices built by Xerox Electro-Optical Systems (XEOS) assist US aircraft.
