In the 25 years which have elapsed since communication satellites were first launched, improvements in launch vehicles and satellite technology have produced a rapid growth in their capability. The first commercial use of space was the international communication service offered by Intelsat. It was followed by the introduction of domestic and maritime satellite systems. In this paper the authors review the evolution of satellite communications systems, paying particular attention to the advances in communications payload technology. They conclude with a more detailed description of Australia's advanced domestic satellite, AUSSAT.
