Chloride Silent Power Ltd. (CSPL), has an established background in sodium-sulphur battery development. Prospective applications in the UK are predominantly in the electric vehicle market. A major objective of the programme at CSPL is to develop sodium-sulphur batteries for these vehicles. The author describes recent advances made in cell development which confirm this system as an extremely attractive proposition for motive power and other energy-storage applications. CSPL has developed a number of sizes of cells for various applications. These range from cells intended for the electric vehicle market to those designed for the US electricity supply industry. The capacities of individual cells range from a 620 Ah (FII cell) for utility applications, to a 150 Ah cell (NAS7 cell) and the new small cell (PB cell) aimed at electric-vehicle batteries.
