Describes the change in submarine cable tension during laying that results from negative slack. When a submarine optical fiber cable is being laid from a cable ship, it is very important to control the cable tension because the fiber elongation tolerance is very small and excessive fiber elongation may cause fiber breakage. The relation of the bottom tension, caused by negative slack, to both water depth and ship velocity is clarified quantitatively. It is shown that the shallower the water depth and faster the ship velocity, the greater the bottom tension.
