Three techniques for enhancing user-system interaction in the context of decision-making in tactical planning at the US Army Corps level are examined. Graphic equivalence refers to the use of split or dual screen hardware configurations that permit users to interact with graphic and alphanumeric screens at the same time. Graphic explanations are those that permit users to see graphically the analytical components of system- and user-generated problem solutions. Embedded-process modeling refers to a technique designed to provide planners with insight into the elements of the planning process and subelements about subproblems, and allow them to enter and re-enter the process at any point without confusion.
