A constant mass body immersed in a fluid requires a force greater than the product of the mass of the body and the acceleration. The reason for this is that in accelerating the body one must also accelerate some of the fluid in order that it may move out of the way. This larger mass is called the apparent mass of the body, and it may be considered as the sum of the actual mass of the body and the hydrodynamic mass.
