An assessment is made of the durability and maintainability of the non-metallic (fiberglass/resin) composite airframe structure presently in service on some of today's commercial jet aircraft. A summary of problems seen to date, their causes, and possible solutions are outlined, including an analysis of certain maintenance and repair costs. Utilizing past service experience with non-metallic composite structure, certain objectives are listed for future cost effective structural design as a function of weight/durability/maintainability/manufacturing cost. A zone concept for cost effective design and economic repair is proposed, with requirements for a parallel development of definite repair schemes with any new project structural design. It is concluded that criteria for any cost effective structural design must properly weigh durability and maintainability in zones where severe environmental deterioration and/or acute risk of damage is highly probable.
