Recent investigations into the breakdown mechanisms of ignition sparks have shown that the equivalent circuit diagrams used commonly until now to describe the associated transient processes need to be refined. The new results lead to a formulation of 4 requirements for optimum suppression. Suppression devices designed accordingly guarantee interference-free operation of electronic systems in motor vehicles and conform to the legal requirements for electromagnetic interference in the frequency range between 30 to 1000 MHz.
