During recent years the 956/1163 twin engine family comprising 12, 16 and 20-cylinder models for the present 1800 to 4400 kW (2450 - 6000 HP) power bracket was developed on the basis of operational experience with MTU 12 V 956 and 16 V 956 engines, of which some 800 units are used for rail traction, marine propulsion and electric power generation. The common basic feature of this twin engine family concept is an identical 230 mm bore which is associated with a 230 mm stroke for the 956 family operated at speeds of 1350 to 1600 rpm, or a 280 mm stroke for the 1163 family to cover the same output range as the 956 family, but at speeds of between 1000 and 1200 rpm. As is generally known, an engine family concept provides a high proportion of identical components, but the chosen twin engine family concept entails the further advantage of extensive component identity within the short and long-stroke version, it being also ensured that even differing items can be produced through the same production facilities.
