The primary purpose of this study was to develop a means for determining the optimum frequency for inspecting brake system components in order to minimize their occurrence in a defective condition while in use on the U.S. Highways. The present study collects and analyzes brake component inspection data resulting from wheel-removal programs conducted by several states. Analysis of the data from those states revealed that the results were essentially the same as the results obtained from an analysis of DOT's VIU data base. The analysis also revealed that it was possible to merge the data from the state wheel-removal program and thus update the VIU data base. The results of the study indicated that the Optimum Brake Inspection Plan can likewise be utilized as a plan for specifying the optimum frequency of insPection for brake system components. (Jensen)
