A summary fo the current capabilities of Si3N4 and SiC bodies for Naval turbine applications is presented. Materials are available for short life applications, and the potential for meeting desired longer life requirements or growth in short life temperatures is indicated. However, no material presently exists which clearly meets long life goals, e.g. for ship propulsion or significant future growth in short life temperatures. Opportunities for developing materials to meet these closely related goals by evolution of existing materials and particularly by developing new compounds and new processing approaches are discussed. The portions of these approaches being addressed in our program and their presentation in subsequent papers is noted. Similarly, a briefer discussion of the needs, as well as our program and the related papers on mechanical evaluation of SiC and Si3N4 is presented. Preliminary results on composite materials fabrication are briefly discussed. (Jensen)
