The high pressure fuel turbopump and the high pressure oxidizer turbopump of the Space Shuttle Main Engine are modeled by a rotor system consisting of two disks on an elastic shaft. If the pump torque and the turbine torque tend to remain aligned with their respective disk axis, then nonsynchronous torquewhirl may result. This whirl will be in a backward direction at a frequency of approximately one-half the shaft speed. For 5 percent viscous damping, the power required to produce torquewhirl in the fuel pump is found to be much greater than actually developed. For 5 percent damping in the lox pump, the power required is again larger than produced. However, the lox pump model may be nonconservative due to an overestimate of the damping and an underestimate of the disks' tilt angles.
