Dynamic analysis of mechanical components in the high frequency range can be accomplished by the finite element method (FEM) or by the Statistical Energy Analysis (SEA) method. FEM sizes are directly related to the minimum half-wave length of interest; for higher modes, this approach is limited by available computer core and computational cost. Modal synthesis and cyclic symmetry now make it possible to use the FEM method in the NASTRAN computer program over a wider frequency range. The SEA method, requiring only limited computation, is effectively used when modal density is very high. A Navy bull gear has been analyzed by the NASTRAN program. The basic cyclically symmetrical substructure consists of 1/8 of the gear, represented by a 3000 degree-of-freedom FE model. Transfer functions are compared with those from electrodynamic shaker tests and the SEA method. Advantages and disadvantages of each method are assessed. (Wassmann)
