The automotive outer panel must be made thinner to provide for weight and cost reductions. It often happens, however, that the panel cannot be made as thin as desired due to insufficient sweep stiffness. It the panel sweep stiffness is quantitatively estimated at the clay model stage, it can provide feedback for the clay model, producing a marked effect on design. We have developed NONSHEL, a large deformation analysis program mainly for the analysis of panel sweep stiffness. It is utilized to examine the accuracy of calculation and for determining how to make appropriate models which enable accurate calculation and limited calculation time. Further, we have developed a system for easily constructing an analysis model from the diagram data of the clay model so that the designer may conduct panel sweep stiffness analysis with ease during line work.
