Most off-road vehicles operate for at least some of their time on road surfaces, where they must mix with vehicles having higher braking and handling standards. Braking performance of off-road vehicles is analysed both in straight line and turning manoeuvres. Predictions from this analysis are compared with practical measurements using agricultural tractor and trailer combinations and found to agree reasonably well. Scope for improvement centres around the addition of tractor front brakes and better trailer brakes. Both of these not only improve braking performance but also stability, because less reliance need be placed on the tractor rear brakes, which in turn reduces the chances of wheel locking and hence jack-knifting.
