Engine dynamometer and field testing has been carried out to evaluate the performance of various blends of ethanol with petroleum fuels in Australian spark ignition engines. Some operational problems have been found in vehicle fuel systems, and engine response with respect to emissions, economy and driveability is shown to be determined predominantly by the air fuel ratio spectrum to which a particular engine is subject. Blending of ethanol is seen to provide an improvement in fuel anti-knock performance at low speeds, but this is offset by a nett loss in such performance at high speeds. Durability testing of a blend of ethanol with unleaded petrol has shown no problems outside valve seat and face wear observed currently with other unleaded fuels such as liquid petroleum gas.
