In order to determine causes of accidents involving large trucks turning to the left, visibility from a driver seat was examined by means of the fish-eye lens photo-technique and eye-mark records. Visibility from a cab-over type truck seat proved to be poorer than that from a bonnet type truck and other vehicles seat, with respect to the area direct to the side and the back of the vehicle. Most truck drivers as well as most pedestrians who replied to the questionnaire were unaware of this broad blind area. Eye-movements for confirming safety on the truck side were also found to be inebitably limited, because the driver had to focus his attention on the on-going traffic. A Fresnel lens attached at the left window of the cab reduced the blind area, and an experimentally designed low cabin truck remarkably improved the direct visibility from a drivers position.
