Component development is a vital aspect of the Automotive Stirling Engine (ASE) Development Program. The objective of this activity is to advance Stirling engine technology with an emphasis on cost, performance, and design simplicity. Significant achievements have been made in each engine system area. These include, but are not limited to, elimination of strategic materials in the heater head; reduction of drive friction and elimination of low rpm power limit through use of rolling element drive; and a 75 % reduction in combustion air system parts. Such advances have led to both performance improvements and simplification of the various engine systems; these advances allow the program effort to enter a new development phase. The challenge now lies in integrating the various system components into a complete engine and then proving this design by extensive test cell and transient testing.
