When the authorities in the United Kingdom were first required to test anti-lock braking systems there were many facets of ECE Rrgulation 13 that were ambiguous. The test procedures and equipment that were evolved during the first year or two now allow an objective and repeatable assessment to be made of an anti-lock braking system on a road vehicle. The particular aspects of the tests which are examined in some detail are the measurement of tyre to road adhesion, the measurement of energy consumption, the testing of semi-trailer systems which use 'slave controlled' wheels and the assessment of the system susceptibility to interference from electro-magnetic fields.
