Decomposed methanol, i.e. hydrogen and carbon monoxide, has a great potential for the use as a cold fuel for methanol engines. The result of a theoretical evaluation indicates that the time required for sufficient gas production in order to start the engine should be considerably less than one minute. The experimental results do not, however, quite support the theoretical predictions. The reactor design has been found to be of the utmost importance for the feasability of this concept. In particular the total heat capacity of the reactor has to be minimized.
