High power Nd:YAG lasers are attracting significant industrial interest in the automotive industry due to their ability to deliver the laser energy through a fibre-optic cable, which is ideal for robotic manipulation. Over 3.5 kW power is able to be transmitted to the workpiece from a number of commercial systems. Within the automotive industry, these lasers are now used in production for both body-in-white assembly (for instance roof to side panel) and tailored blank production. This paper will describe results obtained both on steel and aluminium sheet relevant to automotive applications including butt joints for tailored blanks and lap joints for roof to side panels. Consideration will not only be given to the processing speeds that can be achieved but also to process tolerances and methods of optimising weld quality, reliability and performance.
