The recently introduced 'Substitution Monopole Technique' is used to study the noise radiation from the engine/gearbox combination of a heavy truck. This technique is based on a separate characterisation of the source by an equivalent source description and the noise transmission into the far field by transferfunctions. The technique is used together with Computational Fluid Dynamic models in a coupled optimisation approach for noise and cooling to optimise the enclosure design for maximum noise reduction without any drawback on cooling performance.
