A method for applying Energy Dispersive X-Ray Fluorescence (EDXRF) analysis to the F404 engine onboard the F-18 weapon system has been developed the demonstrates over 100 hours of advanced warning of engine failure. The Department of Defense (DOD) routinely uses rotrode atomic emission spectroscopy (RDE-AES) as the primary tool for monitoring the condition of the lubricant wetted sections of weapon systems. Lubricant samples are taken at prescribed intervals and analyzed primarily for metallic elements. The effectiveness of AES as a condition monitoring tool is limited by three micron (fine) filtration of lubricant streams, particles larger than 10 microns and the inability to analyze the particles from lubricant filters without chemically transforming the particles. EDXRF can analyze particulates extracted from lubricant filters larger than 10 microns without altering the chemical form of the particles.
