In deepwater, the extended mooring cable lengths result in greater self weights which influence both operational and installation loads. The potential for improvements to strength suggests that the use of steel products in increasingly deep water locations is feasible. Considering the metallurgical properties required for rope making and considering the expense and availability of exotic materials, the options are limited to developments in high carbon steel. The finished wire rope strength is governed by the properties of the component wires. The three key parameters that dictates the finished wire tensile strength are discussed.
