Over the past several decades the Army has been interested in transparent (visible and infrared wavelengths) armor ceramics where lightweight protection with minimal optical distortion is needed. These armor applications range from vision blocks for tanks to face shields for the individual soldier. In recent years, significant progress has been made in the processing of large-size pieces of these materials increasing the likelihood of their utilization. This paper provides a brief summary of the Army's efforts in this area and presents property, processing and ballistic data on state-of-the-art aluminum oxynitride (AlON) and spinel (MgAl2O4, the two leading materials for such applications.
