An AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) with distributed controller and underwater acoustic communication system is described. The AUV was made compact and light weight by employing variable vector propeller mechanism and a control system built up sophisticated logic circuit. Control of the AUV was realized with great precision using the underwater ultrasonic command signals. Experimental results indicate that the AUV could move along the target path and hold the desired position keeping the azimuth direction. Also, it was confirmed that the new algorithm to increase the reliability of the ultrasonic communication system worked satisfactorily.
