A brief overview of several promising research and development directions involving the Molecular Engineering of organic and polymer materials is presented. The application of these materials to evolve new photonic components and systems is discussed. Nonlinear optical (NLO) polymer based photonic (PBP) materials may very well enable and expedite the realization of new and improved optical processing systems and architectures for space insertion. A discussion of current NLO polymeric research trends, comparison of expected and reported PBP optical and electrical performance parameters, and a brief comparison of recently reported responses of inorganic and organic photonic components and materials in ionizing radiation environments, is presented.
