The STRIDE JIP conducted test initiatives into several areas considered to be crucial to the design of steel catenary risers for harsh, deepwater environments. Through water-tank testing of a 1/4 inch diameter x 100ft long catenary model, the response in the touchdown region for rigid and elastic seabed simulations was determined. Vortex induced vibration tests were also carried out on riser models 20ft and 650ft long. Based on these tests, the requirement and effectiveness of strakes on inclined sections as well as the non-vertical riser response to high currents were clarified.
