Limited travel distance, long recharging time, need for frequent recharging, plus lack of recharging facilities near residential and business communities are just some of the major obstructions to the promotion and popularity of the electric scooter (ES). Replacing the establishment of recharging stations with the notion of battery swapping is about the best solution to overcome these electric scooters recharging problems. 'The notion of battery swapping utilizes conventional fueling station infrastructure, but instead of refueling with gasoline, the electric scooter rider simply swaps batteries. The time needed for such a swap is comparable to the traditional gasoline refueling time. This would minimize delays and enable electric scooters to travel long distances without having to worry about recharging and the time needed. The scope of operations for the battery swapping and leasing company would be to operate battery swapping stations, charge batteries, and lease charged batteries to electric scooter riders. The time frame for this study is from the year 2000 up to 2010, with the assumption that only one electric scooter battery swap and lease company would be in operation. The results of this study represent an overall industry total, to assess the feasibility of such battery swapping business. lt is also assumed that by the year 2010, Taiwan would have 4.54 million electric scooters on the road. The battery swapping company shall utilize automated battery swapping equipment to exchange batteries. Conventional scooter gasoline operational costs shall be used as the basis for battery swapping pricing structure. This will show the operational efficiency of battery swapping, to be considered as an alternative to the establishment of recharging stations.
