CHAMELEON (Pre-crash application all around the vehicle) and PROTECTOR (Preventive Safety for unprotected road user) are two European projects carried out within the framework of the IST Programme with a financial contribution from the European Commission, covering safety area. As anticipated by the title, the first project aims to study sensors and applications capable of improving the performance of the existing passive safety systems (airbag and safety belt mainly) and to integrate other ADAS applications of the future. The second project studies applications in the field of preventive safety of subjects like pedestrian (in particular children), cycles and motor-vehicles, which are not considered by the ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) so far developed. The paper will summarise the relevant objectives of the two projects and the adopted technologies, which in a first phase application will be seperately applied for the pre-crash and pedestrian detection functions, but in the medium term will be fused in order to improve the vehicle performances in term of safety and to guarantee the so called 'multi-functional approach' in an intelligent vehicle vision which will promote the integration of safety systems. A short paragraph will be dedicated to this concept, too. Indeed it is foreseen that in the future it will be necessary, as well as reasonable, to have within the car same sensors devoted to many applications. A first step toward this concepts is possible through a new sensorial system platform (a sort of second generation sensorial system) and new on board network.
