This paper provides an overview of rollover sensing and describes a sensing hardware and algorithm approach to detecting and predicting rollover such that occupant safety restraints can be activated to reduce injury. The engineering and technology involved in the design, development and manufacturing test of a low-cost, automotive rollover sensor continues to provide unique and challenging opportunities. It has been demonstrated, using automotive-grade rate sensors and accelerometers, along with a capable sensing algorithm, it is possible to detect many vehicle rollover and pitchover events. In addition, as the vehicle rollover process begins, it can be predicted, a short time in advance, of the vehicle crossing a critical angular threshold. This prediction processing may be important so that certain occupant restraints can be timely activated in an attempt to mitigate injury. The goal is to develop, evaluate and test the various sensing and algorithm technologies involved in the ability to accurately sense rollover events. Some of the ongoing issues that require additional effort include angular rate sensor evaluation, algorithm development, seeking new, low-cost sensing technologies, and implementing manufacturing process for the competitive automotive marketplace.
