RolaTube Technology has developed a smart structures technology called bi-stable reeled composite (BRC). Made from layers of reinforced thermoplastic, BRC can alternate between two stable forms; that of a strong, rigid structure and that of a compact coil of flat-wound material. The industrial and commercial applications of BRCs fall into two main categories; compact actuators and reeled tubes and pipes. BRC reeled linear actuators exploit the ability of the material to cycle between its coiled and extended form many times. BRC actuating arms can extend many times their retracted length. Used for the remote deployment of cameras and other tools into hazardous environments, BRC actuators have facilitated access and data collection, while reducing plant downtime and the exposure of personnel to potential hazards. Examples used successfully for the inspection of confined spaces in nuclear reactors are described. Manufactured in continuous lengths as reeled pipes and pipe-linings, BRCs offer the prospect of savings in transportation and installation costs. On site, the BRC is extended from its reel and seam-welded to form a pipe. The integration of sensors between the layers will enable BRC pipes to provide real-time data on their own integrity, pipeline contents and on the external environment.
