A new layer system to reduce the reflection of the automotive windshield for drivers has been developed with using DC magnetron sputtering. This implies that the reflection of the oblique incident light should be reduced with maintaining reasonably high transmission. Moreover the coating should endure the heating treatment in the bending and lamination processes in the production of the automotive windshield. The authors modulated the original layer system (Glass/TiN(x)O(y) (10 nm) / SiN(x) (5 nm) / SiO2 (85 nm)//Air), which had been developed and successfully applied for CRT displays, to match these requirements. Mathematically optimized layer system for 60 deg of angle incidence was Air//Glass/TiN(x)O(y)(7 nm)/SiN(x) (5 nm)/SiO2 (108 nm)//Air, whereas experimentally optimized layer system, Air//Glass/ SiN(x)O(y) (7 nm)/(SiN(x) (5 nm)/)SiO2 (113 nm)//Air, showed very good agreement with theoretical result. Measured residual visible reflection from this layer system at 60 deg of angle incidence is around 10.3 %, which is roughly 2/3 of that from an uncoated glass surface and is close to the calculated values.
