A reliable leak detection method, which can also be categorized to the fault model approach is described. The method is based on a nonlinear system (pipeline) and its state estimation. An iterative numerical method is applied to solve the system of nonlinear equations. And the system's modeling errors are minimized via extended Kalman filtering. An on-line procedure of stationary-state monitoring is used to cope with varying operational conditions that improves the overall performance of the detection algorithm. On-line estimation of the leak position and size is carried out based on a model of possible leaks assigned to predetermined position along the monitored pipeline. The discussed method is verified by simulation means.
